Character Background
• History: link
So just so explain, Gabi is a child soldier who was raised by a fanatical family. She was heavily influenced by this and was just as fanatical until character development, where she now regrets her actions.
• Core Relationships:
Gabi's biggest, most influential relationship is with her family. That said, we don't actually see much of her parents. Just that they're supportive and love her. Unfortunately, they're supportive of her being the best child soldier in Marley's warrior unit. Encouraging to so her best and show how good she is by killing as many enemies as possible. Even knowing this will lead to her dying young, to them it's an honor. Similarly, there's her aunt Karina who is even more enthusiastic of about the idea of Gabi dying to prove their family is good.
Of her family, the most influential is her cousin, Reiner. Initially, Gabi idolises him. She wants to be just like him, he's a heroic figure who went deep into enemy territory, killed many and returned. She wants to succeed him and gain his memories to honor him... Which involves eating him to get his Titan powers and dying in 13 years...
Throughout the last part of the series Gabi sees more to Reiner. Like how much the fighting traumatized him. And how he'd befriended the 'inhumane' enemies and was upset by their deaths. Which makes her see him as more human instead of this grand figure. And is one of the things to make her start questioning everything.
The other person who affects her the most is a fellow Warrior candidate, Falco. Initially, Gabi doesn't like him. She sees him as a rival whose trying to muscle in on her role as top Warrior. Especially when he seems to improve and starts beating her in some tests. Technically, she's right but for the wrong reasons. Falco is trying to take her spot because he has a crush and doesn't want her to die in 13 years. Everyone knows he likes her, except Gabi. She's completely oblivious.
To her, he's a weak, softie who sympathises with the enemy too much to be trustworthy. She sees him being kind and stuttering around her as him being condescending and making fun of her. So she's kinda mean and shoves him around.
This starts to change when thanks to Gabi being reckless, they both end up in enemy territory. Even when Gabi is being very bad at hiding and trying to murder everyone they come across, Falco sticks by to hold her back and talk her down. Even when it'd be much safer for him to bail. For a while she just sulks about it.
Her view only starts to change when he takes a hit aimed at her and is put in critical condition. That's when she starts to feel regret, because someone close her has gotten hurt directly because of her actions. As the person who attacked was the lover of one of Gabi's victims.
This is compounded by Kaya. The adoptive sister of said victim. Initially, the girl is kind to Gabi, covering for her outbursts even when Gabi is calling her names and saying her mom deserved to die horribly. She just stonewalls everything Gabi throws at her, calmly questioning her back.
Then she learns that Gabi killed her sister. Kaya then tries to kill Gabi. Seeing her pain and how close Falco is to death is the final push that makes Gabi realise that... Everyone involved is human. And that she's a terrible person for ignoring that.
Character Personality Through Key Moments
(2+) Positive Experiences:
...Blowing up the armored train
One of Gabi's establishing moments is her showing how resourceful and ruthless she can be. For a while she's quiet, oddly so. To the point that three of her friends realise she's not said anything for a while. Then she proudly holds up a bundle of grenades and pulls puppy-dog eyes on her commander.
This doesn't work. He promptly shoots her plan down and brings up how much it cost to train her. Gabi's not deterred though. She ups the puppy-dog eyes, asks him if her life is worth more than the possible 1000s that'd be lost if they go with the other plan. Then she tells him he's right, she is worth more, look at her isn't she the cutest? At this point, the commander just gives up and lets her go with her idea.
Which is war crimes!
That is not a joke. Others point it out and Gabi just replies that what she's about to do isn't a war crime...if no one lives to report it. Then she strips to her undies, ties the grenades to her leg and pretends to be an injured, escaped hostage. Then once she's close enough, she drops the app and throws the grenade at them.
Then runs away, laughing manically. She sees nothing wrong with what she'd just done.
Especially not when the rest of her unit praises her and call her a hero, because they no longer have to risk their lives.
The festival
Not long after this, there is a festival to celebrate Marley's enemies surrendering. (Unbeknownst to Gabi and the others, it's a plot to lure someone out but shh) Gabi is amazed, she's spent her whole life in the slums and now she's getting to try so many new foods. She spends the day with her friends, being treated to things like pizza by Reiner.
She's so happy she literally jumps for joy and yells about it. Wishing every day can be like this. And that she'll be the best Warrior so that can happen.
(2+) Negative Experiences:
Attack on Libero
The same day of the festival, they're attacked. One of Gabi's friends is killed by falling rubble another is killed in the crush of people. Then the two gate guards who'd been nice to Gabi when they didn't have to are also shot right in front of her. Gabi, whose already spent her live being raised with her head filled with propaganda, grabs the fallen guard's rifle and gives chase.
She was already spouting hate before, but this event makes it 1000% worse.
Because as far as she's concerned, all those bits of propaganda have just been proven correct. These people deserve to die. So without really thinking it through and going against her commander's orders. She rushes off, shooting one of the enemy guards and sneaking on their blimp. Falco tries to stop her but ends up trapped with her.
Gabi then decides the best thing to do. Thousands of feet in the air, is to give herself away and start shooting. She kills one person and is promptly caught and detained.
Meeting Nicolo
This does nothing to make Gabi change her mind. She quickly escapes by using the fact that she's a child and pretending to be ill to make a soldier come in and try to help her, who she smacks in the head with a brick.
Eventually, she comes across Nicolo. He's also from Marley, and has been a POW for an unknown amount of time. Like Gabi, he hated Eldians... Past tense, because he's fallen in love with an Eldian and that was the thing that made him start looking at Eldians differently. He's horrified at Gabi's joy at seeing him, especially when she starts talking about all the Eldians she's killed.
Then she mentions one in particular. Even with Nicolo's obviously growing horror, Gabi just keeps talking about how she killed this woman good. Even when he punches her, she's confused at why he's upset with her.
It's only when Falco jumps in and takes a glass bottle to the head that Gabi starts to realise how much her actions hurt others.
